Turner is perhaps the best-loved English Romantic artist. He became known as 'the painter of light', because of his increasing interest in brilliant colours as the main constituent in his landscapes and seascapes. His works include water colours, oils and engravings. Turner was born near Covent Garden in London and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1789. His earliest works form part of the 18th-century topographical tradition. He was soon inspired by 17th-century Dutch artists such as Willem van der Velde, and by the Italianate landscapes of Claude and Richard Wilson. Liddy will teach how to make effective use of composition, to put together a creative layout across a few sketchbook pages and how to observe and work in response to the environment you're in by creating artwork on location, before starting on a watercolour painting. We'll provide materials and a sketchbook for you to keep too. About our art activities. You'll be guided by our very friendly, and knowledgeable art tutor, Liddy. You are free to take as much guidance as you like, but we certainly won't restrict your creative flair. Piet Mondrian was a Dutch artist famous for his iconic Composition series of grid paintings composed of black lines, white grounds, and primary colors. In Broadway Boogie-Woogie (1942–1943), Mondrian represented New York’s streets as a series of squares and lines in an attempt to capture the rhythmic vitality of the city.
